Forest School

A small group of children participates in Forest School each term, and they stay together for the whole term to develop new friendships and build on their previous learning. Our Forest School staff are fully qualified at level 3 and level 2, and they accompany the children every week. We conduct comprehensive Risk Assessments and inspect the Forest School site before each session. We also put up signs to inform others that Forest School is in session.

The Forest School is a rich and diverse environment for the children to explore. They learn about the different types of trees, grasses, plants as well as the wildlife and the habitats of the insects and animals they encounter. They have fun getting messy, breathing fresh air and experiencing the weather. They also engage in sensory and meaningful interactions with the Forrest School teachers, who are trained to support their learning. The Forest School sessions enhance their language, confidence and attention skills.

We explain to the children how to stay safe and why it is important, we help them assess the risks and make them responsible for their choices- such as what they can touch, where they can walk, how to handle an insect. With a high staff to child ratio, they are always near an adult who can support, guide and encourage them.

After returning to Rainbow, the children change their clothes, wash their hands and usually take a nap. The Forest School Leader will write a summary of what happened during that session and upload it to Tapestry, where it becomes part of their journals. Forest School has many benefits and there is a lot of evidence for its effectiveness and positive impact. The children love it and have a great time; we are happy to offer Forest School to our children!
